In 1987, # 1 Oklahoma had big-time stars on offense in junior quarterback Jamelle Holieway, fullback Lydell Carr and All-American tight end Keith Jackson. The Sooners came in averaging 54 points per game. The defense featured end Darrell Reed, linebacker Dante Jones, and defensive back Rickey Dixon. Oklahoma already had two shutouts and was holding opponents to 4 points per game. Coach Switzer's squad was favored by 30 points over Texas. Oklahoma dominated the '87 Red River Rivalry 44-9 and rushed for almost 400 yards in the Cotton Bowl.
